There are many methods of analyzing a multi-Gb/s serial channel, and one of the newer emerging methods is channel operating margin, or COM. COM is used by Ethernet as a method for identifying channel quality, by comparison of a signal to noise ratio (with some underlying assumptions).

Mentor recently released the newest version of its HyperLynx signal integrity software. This version may be the first SI tool in the industry to fully automate SERDES design channel validation.
