Microsoft's Gates Opens CES 2007
January 8, 2007 |Estimated reading time: 1 minute
<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Las Vegas -- Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates kicked off the International Consumer Electronics Show late Sunday, delivering his eleventh annual keynote address to a packed audience in at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
Gates presentation discussed how his company's latest products and partnerships will facilitate Internet usage. He pointed out how now people are using personal computers for gaming, movie viewing, photography and other personal content choices. Microsoft is involved in all these areas, from its Xbox video game hardware and recently introduced portable media players to traditional desktop software and Xbox Live online service that sells downloadable movie and TV content.
The most important topic in Gates' speech was the consumer launch of Windows Vista later this month. This is the first opertating system revision for Microsoft since Windows XP was launched in 2001.
Gates discussed some additional Vista features that hadn't been made public. One of the more interesting items is a new "sports lounge" area where sports fanatics can watch videos, get breaking news and scores, and even get fantasy sports points totals. Another Vista benefit will be its interface with Web-based subscription movie services.
Another interesting part of the keynote was when Gates discussed how Microsoft hardware partners are releasing new computers that will maximize Vista's performance. Expect to see a kitchen computer from H-P, a new Sony computer that's feels more like an entertainment device than a PC, and high-end tablet notebooks from Toshiba that even allow users to see email coming in through a second display when the laptop is closed.
CES will resume today, as the consumer electronics industry celebrates what many expect to be a strong 2007 on the heels of Vista's release. PCB007's Dan Feinberg (photo below) will continue to cover this event throughout the week.
